Build 2 Lead was honored this September by The Lloyd Dean Institute of Human Kindness and Health Justice at CommonSpirit Health. The award recognizes B2L's significant and lasting impacts in our community.
B2L is at the forefront of providing BIPOC youth the tools they need to change systems and build skills for the future. Through partnerships and youth programming, B2L is able to provide instruction, mentoring and community experiences that empower students, bridge gaps, and illuminate non-traditional pathways.
Programs and events like Melanin and Medicine and the P.O.W.E.R. Conference are instrumental in exposing students to exciting career opportunities in the healthcare field. These community opportunities connect students and families to professionals in healthcare, fitness, and mental health while creating a space for youth and mentors to network, share experiences, and celebrate community.
B2L founder, Jimmy Brown accepted the award an spoke about the impact of the partnership between Build 2 Lead and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH) and it's impact on students.
He highlighted the story of one student who's life was transformed by the partnership. The student, who aspired to work in healthcare, was concerned about her ability to get into a program or find a career due to her low GPA. B2L was able to connect her with a VMFH mentor, fostering a relationship that helped her to raise her GPA and pursue a college degree. Today, thanks to the guidance of B2L and VMFH, she was able to being a training program to further her health care career goals.
"It's an important milestone for B2L, being a newer organization," said Jimmy Brown. "We're excited to see what the next four years hold. This award is definitely a staple for us."
Thank you to the The Lloyd Dean Institute of Human Kindness and Health Justice at CommonSpirit Health and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health for our ongoing partnerships and support.
