Closing the G.A.P. May Updates

In partnership with ROOTS of Success, Closing the G.A.P. provides students ages 16-24 with access to over 100 hours of work development training. Students graduate with resumes, interview experience, business plans, and industry credentials.

Theme Week: Water Module

During this theme week, students completed the Water Module, gaining comprehensive knowledge on various water management systems and practices. They explored topics such as Water Management Systems, Water Towers, Hydraulic Systems, Flood Irrigation, Drip Irrigation, Rainwater Catchment Systems, Native and Edible Landscaping, Ecological Wastewater Treatment, and the Cycle of Bottled Water.

A significant focus was placed on understanding the importance of reducing water consumption and the emerging careers dedicated to creating sustainable water systems. Students learned about the bottled water industry's inception and the misconceptions surrounding it. They discovered that some bottled water is of lower quality than local tap water and that there is no regulation ensuring bottled water's cleanliness and freshness. The module concluded with students completing questionnaires based on the educational videos they watched.

Theme of the Week: "Green Careers Quiz."

The theme for this week was Green Careers Quiz. This quiz allows youth to answer a few simple questions online and get recommendations for a rewarding green career path that might suit their personality. Career quizzes often ask students to reflect on their interests, skills, values, and personality traits. This process of introspection can help students better understand themselves and what they're looking for in a career. Due to cheerleading tryouts, summer league basketball, and other obligations only a few students were able to complete the quiz in CTG on Monday. Eventually, all students in CTG will take the quiz. Students taking the Green Jobs Quiz was essentially for us, as an organization, as we'll be looking for job opportunities once students graduate from CTG.

Overall, the Water and Waste Management modules were crucial in educating students about sustainability and encouraging them to think critically about their environmental impact and future career paths.
